AnyoneAnybody who has spent any time abroad whether on holiday or working overseas will shortly realize what good value the BBC licence is and what top of the range programming the BBC and other UK TV channels provide.

The BBC and other UK TV networks broadcasters use an IP address based system to contol which people can watch their content and spectators whose IP address isn’t in the UK will get a message ‘Not available in your area’ when attempting to use iPlayer.

Part of the reason for this is to guard their cash, for example, popular dramas such as the glorious BBC production of ‘The diary of Anne Frank’ will be sold to other countries and the revenue earned will help to back other productions.

Some of the programs shown by the BBC is not owned by them but is ‘rented’ just like you and I might rent a film from a video shop. In such cases, the BBC or ITV will only have bought the rights to air the content on regular TV and won’t be able to make it available on the internet.

Examples of this are box office films and big sports occassions such as soccer matches. In these instances, Internet viewers will get a message to the effect that ‘for legal reasons, the show can only be viewed on regular television’.
